Oakhurst

Oakhurst, also referred to as the Mathews House, was the home of Clara B. Crotwell and husband Budd Cade Mathews. The house was built about 1891 on land belonging to Clara's father, James A. Crotwell, at 2723 Main Street, Newberry.

Oakhurst was a two-story brick house with a three story turret and inverted quoins. There was also a small brick milk house, wooden hen house, stable, double brick privy and frame kitchen set on a raised brick basement.

Clara's brother, Samuel P. Crotwell, built his own house across the street from Oakhurst.  The picture of Jim and Helen Crotwell with baby (Helen Gray Crotwell) shows Oakhurst in the background across the street.

Many years later, the house was restored and tours were conducted by the Newberry Historical Society. When the house was restored the original cream and red color scheme specified by the architects was kept. Unfortunately in 2002, not long after the restoration, the land was sold for commercial development and the house was destroyed.

The Newberry Historical Society created a stained glass suncatcher of the house in 2003 to commemorate the house.
