Robert Junkin was born in Ireland and came to South Carolina in the early 1800s. He served and was wounded in the Mexican War fighting with the Palmetto Regiment. He served as a Sgt, Lt and Captain with Orr's Regiment in the Confederate Army and was wounded three times. He carried the last bullet the rest of his life.
While he spelled his name without the "s", most of his children used the name Junkins.
