The Patterson family ancestors were Protestants of English and Scottish descent who had settled in Ireland before migrating to the English colonies. My fourth great-grandfather, Michael Patterson, eventually settled in North Carolina.
An interesting note about this family is that Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson married Napoleon Bonaparte's brother, Jerome, against the wishes of both her father and Napoleon. Betsy was the daughter of Michael's brother, William of Baltimore, Maryland. Napoleon had the marriage annulled but did recognize their son. Several books and a movie have been made about their story.
