Religion1656He was a Quaker soon after Quakers first came to the colonies in 1656. Peter Gaunt was a member of one of the two first Quaker meetings in the colonies. The "History of Cape Cod" by Freeman states that in 1658 "A Brief Account of Friends' Meetings in New England" reported to England that the Sandwich Monthly Meeting had 18 families and was the first established in America.3
Miscbet 1657 and 1661He was brought before the court multiple times & fined due to harassment of Quakers by authorities for such things as attending the meetings and not swearing an oath bet 1657 and 1661. Peter Gaunt was treated harsher by the courts than Thomas Butler. On 2 Mar 1657/8 Peter Gaunt & others charged with "tumultuous carriage at a meeting" & fined 20 shillings each. On 1 May 1660 most Quakers fined 5 pounds for refusing Oath of Fidelity. In 1661 King Charles put end to disfranchisement of Quakers.3,9
